In this special , Associate Professor of English Jennifer Brice and Assistant Professor of History and Native American Studies Ryan Hall discuss this year’s Living Writers series. 

Living Writers is a signature program of ؾ, offered every fall, both as a course for undergraduates and a companion program for alumni, parents, and community members. This series is led by faculty in the Department of English, with generous support from the Olive B. O’Connor Fund as well as the offices of the President and the Provost and Dean of the Faculty. Brice has written two books, Unlearning to Fly and The Last Settlers, as well as multiple essays, which have been published in American Nature Writing, The Dolphin Reader, Ploughshares, River Teeth, Manoa, Under the Sun, Iron Horse, Permafrost, The Gettysburg Review, and The Sonora Review. Brice is also a member of the Upstate Institute Advisory Board and the ؾ Writers Conference Advisory Board. She holds degrees from Smith College and the University of Alaska–Fairbanks.

Hall specializes in Native American history, the history of the American West, and borderlands history. His book Beneath the Backbone of the World: Blackfoot People and the North American Borderlands, 1720–1877 is a history of the Blackfoot (Niitsitapi) people, and his current research examines the deep history of corruption and fraud in America’s “Indian Affairs” administration from the Revolution through the 19th century. Prior to coming to ؾ, Hall received his PhD from Yale University and taught at the University of Toronto and Northern Arizona University. 

Each episode of 13, ؾ’s biweekly podcast, digs into the work of a University community member by asking 13 questions. Episodes highlight the wide array of academic disciplines at ؾ, with interviews featuring faculty from political science, sociology and anthropology, physics and astronomy, women’s studies, English, Africana and Latin American studies, and many more.
