藏精阁 has established a simple and effective method for students participating in approved off-campus study programs. Students will be invoiced regularly for 藏精阁 tuition, plus the cost of any room and board billed by the approved program provider. In rare instances, students will be billed for visa costs paid through the program provider.
藏精阁 will then pay the approved program provider on the student鈥檚 behalf.
Program fees vary per program. For planning purposes, the Office of Off-Campus Study publishes estimated approved program budgets with a breakdown of billable expenses.
Additional expenses
In addition to tuition and other charges billed by 藏精阁, students should anticipate additional out-of-pocket expenses when planning a budget for the semester, such as:
- Meals not covered by board
- Daily incidentals
- Local transportation
- Books
- Vaccinations
- Airfare
- And more
Each program鈥檚 estimated budget or approved program cost estimate published by the Office of Off-Campus Study includes estimated out-of-pocket expenses. If estimates for the semester you will be away are not yet available, you may wish to check cost estimates for the previous year's program.
Estimated expenses do not include discretionary personal spending on travel, souvenirs, entertainment, etc. Students should carefully consider their own resources and spending habits 鈥 as well as the cost of living in the country where they will study 鈥 to finalize a realistic budget for the semester.
Bear in mind that when all expenses are considered, a semester of off-campus study may cost more than a semester at 藏精阁, especially in high cost-of-living countries.
Financial Aid
Students Currently Receiving Aid
Students who receive financial aid from 藏精阁 may receive additional financial assistance in order to meet the additional costs of off-campus study programs. This financial assistance is available for students to participate in:
- One 藏精阁 study group or Approved Program
- And one 藏精阁-directed extended study program
Financial aid for off-campus study is awarded on the same basis as when studying on campus. It is based on a student鈥檚 Estimated Family Contribution (EFC). A student鈥檚 EFC for the semester of off-campus study is the same as it would be for a semester studying on the 藏精阁 campus.
The financial aid award for a student participating in off-campus study will be adjusted in the following ways:
- Any work-study award will be canceled for the semester of any semester-long program.
- An additional loan of no more than $1,500 will be offered to help cover the extra cost of the program.
- The 藏精阁 Grant, if applicable, will be increased to cover any remaining costs.
Note: Financial aid is available to seniors for extended study courses extending beyond the end of the spring semester. However, any seniors electing to participate in a spring extended study will be eligible to apply for participation in the May commencement ceremony, but will officially graduate at the next degree conferral date. Please refer to the student handbook Student Handbook for details on commencement participation.
Students Not Currently Receiving Aid
Students who are not currently receiving aid from 藏精阁 should consult the Office of Financial Aid to learn about their eligibility for loans to meet extra cost of off-campus study.
External Source of Funding
There are many external scholarships and grants are available for students interested in off-campus study. To take advantage of these opportunities, advance planning is critical.
Interested students should make an appointment to speak with an off-campus study adviser about these opportunities early in their sophomore year.

This scholarship will be awarded to one student each year planning to study abroad in Mexico, Central America, South America, France, or Germany. The scholarship was established in memory of mothers Jane Gluckmann and Carol Rausch. Jane Gluckmann was a mom to her daughters Kerry and Missy and her 鈥渟ons鈥 Rodrigo (from Mexico) and Sergio (from Brasil), as well as others in need; she was most proud of her kids when they were empowered and living fearlessly. Born in France, Carol Rausch traveled Europe with a father and husband, who both served in the United States Air Force; she was first and foremost a loving mom of three children, and shared with them her enthusiasm for travel and passion for other cultures. May the inspirational spirit of these two mothers live on in future Fund for Education Abroad scholarship recipients who are curious about the world and seeking their own educational adventures.
The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. Students may participate in the program as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees).
The Killam Fellowships Program provides a cash award of $5,000 US per semester ($10,000 for a full academic year), and includes a three-day orientation in Ottawa, and a three-day spring seminar in Washington, D.C.. All Killam Fellows are also eligible to apply for a mobility (in-country travel) grant in an amount not to exceed $800 Cdn. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of the culture in Canada. Killam alumni are also eligible to apply for various , such as the Fulbright Canada Alumni Internship Program, the Killam Community Action Initiative, and the Local Ambassador Program.
